THE HISTORY

REMEMBER STOPPING AT CHI-CHI’S AFTER WORK?

Founded by restaurateur Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee in 1975, Chi-Chi's quickly became a beloved staple in the American dining scene. Initially opened in Richfield, Minnesota, the restaurant stood out with its vibrant Mexican "eatery" concept, enticing guests with family dining in a Mexican garden atmosphere and offering superb food and pitchers of margaritas. By the late 1970s, McDermott and McGee had successfully expanded Chi-Chi's into major cities like Cincinnati and Indianapolis, with future plans for further growth in cities such as Detroit and Tampa.

Though Chi-Chi's restaurants are no longer in operation in the U.S. since 2004, the brand remains a cherished memory for many. Its legacy lives on through its popular packaged salsas, tortillas, and seasonings. Excitingly, Chi-Chi’s is staging a comeback. Hormel Foods, the current owner of the Chi-Chi’s trademark, announced plans to reopen the restaurants in 2025 under the direction of Michael McDermott, son of the chain’s co-founder. While specific locations, menu items, and designs are yet to be revealed, this revival promises to rekindle the vibrant experiences Chi-Chi’s was known for and holds a special place in the hearts of those who fondly remember dining there.
